Soldier Boys was selected for the 2001 New York Public Library Books for the Teen Age list. Dean Hughes and his wife, Kathleen, have three children and six grandchildren. This is not a cheery, feel-good Christmas story but it is an uplifting and meaningful depiction of family experiences during WWII. Part of the reason I loved it was because it is set in my hometown and although three months before I was born, it was exactly the place and the culture I experienced as a child.
