So at least I have that to go back and read to make up for it. But I did enjoy Glen's chapters, and held my breath for him and Dibbs to make it through the war and back home to their families. And his chapters put war in perspective. The people you're fighting are just like you. That all the killing and destruction is a terrible waste to solve an issue.

I read this in a day and quite enjoyed it. I liked the premise and immediately felt for this family torn apart by war. I didn't have too high of expectations going in, but was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I became attached to the characters and impacted by their plights. I especially liked Dennis's developmental arc and found his desire to get his mother something special for Christmas so endearing.

Joey takes a real voyage into the wildness of his father’s and his own hyperactive disorder. The voyage ends when Joey decides he wants to return to the comfort of life with his mother. “Home and Away” is about a typical Australian family, whose city becomes war torn, forcing them to sell everything that they own, to become refugees, and go by boat to another, safer country, ‘Hollania’. When they arrive in ‘Hollanian’ waters, their boat is intercepted by the navy of Hollania, who initially tries to force their boat away, but it is sinking, so the refugees are put in prison. 2.5 stars I listened to this and perhaps it would have been better to read. While an interesting story there was not a lot of depth to the characters.
Read it to your kids if you think they can handle it. We believe that picture books are for older readers, as well as for the little ones. This book is one for the big kids and is not suitable for children under the age of 10. If you're over 10 we think you should find an adult to watch the story with you, and talk to them about the book after watching.

This leads me to the idea that the home-away-home structure can function as narrative fulfilment of the desire to be with a departed loved one once again. Harry Potter — the first four books start and end in a dangerous home and allow Harry adventures in what seems to be a more secure place in between. Holes — A stay at a dangerous juvenile detention centre gives Stanley Yelnats a completely new understanding of himself and the home and family he finally returns to. Hatchet — Brian learns to survive the breakup of his parents marriage and his feeling of being isolated after he leaves home in a plane that crashes in the bush and leaves him literally isolated. Having experienced physically what he at first felt emotionally, he returns home with knowledge of his inner strength.

The story is written from the voice of a 15year old boy. The simplicity of the words about such a tough subject matter makes it quite emotional to read. Must admit this book brought tears to me.

It doesn't just happen to 'other people'. Matt Ottley is one of Australia's most acclaimed children's author/illustrators and his works have been translated into several languages. Students can analyse the effects of loss on refugees by doing a compare/contrast activity where they look at how the characters are at the start of the book compared to how they are at the end. Students can also use role play/dramatization and debating to look at the topics in the book as well as investigate the topic through interviews, books, the internet and other sources. Then there’s me, fifteen, into a lot of different stuff.
It's truly heartbreaking, especially when you read the true statistics from the history books. This book gives you a taste of that history, and encourages you to go out and read some more about it. This book was indeed no child's picture book. With having some of the most extreme adult topics and themes, this book was very confronting and moving. From the point of view of a child, we see the journey of a family that was normal and got shocked by the introduction of war into their lives. In their desperation to keep the remanence of their family intact, they board a boat, there only home for a happier and fuller life, effectively becoming asylum seekers.
